Unlike humans, dogs lack sweat glands to perspire and most of
them have a furry coat which only makes the matter worse during summers.
Moreover, some dog breeds find it difficult to adapt to this heat especially,
those with snub-noses become vulnerable to breathing problems. In fact, the
rising temperature during summer puts dogs of all breeds at risk when subjected
to constant heat.
Here we bring a few simple tips which can be employed to help
your dog overcome the summer heat and keep it comfortably cool and healthy.
Tip 1
Provide a small inflatable pool for your pet dog. It should be
shallow and filled with clean water. You can even add a few dog toys in the
pool. Most dogs love playing in water pools during summer. You should place the
pool indoor or if you want to place it outdoors, keep it under a shaded area.
Tip 2
Elevate the dog bed to a suitable height. If possible, the dog playpen should also be elevated for
ensuring ventilation. Also place the playpen in a shaded area.
Tip 3
Replace all the plastic bowls with those of stainless steel, as
water in plastic bowls gets warm faster than in metal bowls. The water in the
bowl should be changed once every day. Also, make sure that your pet dog is
always adequately hydrated.
Tip 4
Install a small fan for your dog in the dog playpen. But you must make sure that the fan is steadily rested
and the cord is properly insulated and caged so as to avoid chewing or pawing
at it. You can hang some scented wet towels in front of the fan to add a
pleasant fragrance to the air.
Tip 5
Change the timing of walks with your pup. Avoid taking your dog out
in the heat. Instead go for a walk post dawn. However, if it is necessary to take
him out, ensure to carry a dog umbrella
with you.
Tip 6
Restrict physical activities and games for your dog, as it might
make him/her weak and drowsy. Instead, provide toys for indoor gaming to keep
it entertained.
Tip 7
Traveling with your dog is not a good option during summer.
But, if you need to go on a long trip, make sure that you take a
well-ventilated pet carrier with you. Another thing you must not forget is that it is quite
dangerous to keep your dog locked alone in the car, as the interior of the car
gets uncomfortable during summer.
